Bayern-Manchester United, possibly the cruelest end of Champions in history
In the world of football, matches with a cruel ending have been seen, but possibly none like the Bayern-Manchester United corresponding to the end of Champions League of the Bell 1998-1999.
The match started very well for the Germans who came forward after five minutes with a goal from a lack of Mario Basler. The match was very disputed and had occasions in both goals but, surely, the bavarian outfit deserved more. In fact, those in Munich sent two balls to the post with 1-0 on the marker that, of having entered, I would have left the party practically sentenced.
THE MANCHESTER GOES BACK IN A MINUTE
But nevertheless, the script for that movie had a macabre ending. In the minute 91 the United he had a corner in favor. It was one of the last opportunities to achieve the equalized by the English team. In fact, your doorman, Peter Schmeichel went up to finish desperate.
The center put it David Beckham, was poorly cleared by the Bavarian defense, fell at the feet of Ryan Giggs that he threw to the door with his less good leg and in the goal mouth he riveted Sheringham to put the tables on the marker.
But it would not end there. When it seemed that the champion would be decided in overtime, the English team returned to cause another corner just a minute after having marked the tie. Again, Beckham centered, Sheringham finished off head first and Solskjaer to him 2-1 causing delirium in the ranks of the United.
The cartwheel of Schmeichel, Pierluigi Collina, match referee, trying to lift the players from the Bayern they were lying on the ground, Alex Ferguson gone mad in the band…
Many years have passed since that Bayern-Manchester but his images are still in our memory. A final that Oliver Kahn, raffle Matthaus, Marcus Babbel, Stefan Effenberg… they had practically won and they got out of hand.
Some of them managed to recover a couple of years later by winning a new final in the penalty shootout at Valencia, but they will never forget that 26 May 1999 in Camp Nou.
