Last update November 14, 2022 by colgadosporelfutbol

The world Cup, held every four years, It is the most important international tournament at the level of national teams. In this article we will review some of the most great teams that never won a World Cup. By football tradition, quality of some of its players or, even, number of inhabitants, some cases attract a lot of attention.

Great teams that never won the World Cup

Netherlands / Holland

Undoubtedly, the most striking case, we can say, more painful. One of the great national teams that have never won a World Cup having disputed (and lost) up to three finals. The first of them in 1974, with that magnificent team known as Clockwork Orange, led by the incomparable Johan Cruyff. Four years later, in 1978, fell against Argentina, the host. By last, South Africa 2010 against Spain with Iniesta's famous goal. His only win at the international level was the European Championship 1988.

Portugal

Another country that has had great teams and players who are among the best in history such as Eusebio O Cristiano Ronaldo, to cite a couple of examples. The Portuguese team obtained its best result in a World Cup in the year 1966 when he finished in third place and in 2006 where was room. Although he has achieved a European Championship and a League of Nations, the World Cup continues to resist the Portuguese.

Mexico

The Mexican team is the one that has played the most World Cups behind Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina. further, It is the country where the most World Cups have been held (1970, 1986 and the one that will take place in 2026 along with the United States and Canada).

It is a very soccer-loving country with a large number of inhabitants. further, has had great players throughout its history such as Hugo Sanchez. But nevertheless, the Mexicans have never made it past the quarterfinals.

Russia / USSR

Another giant who has never won a World Cup. The Soviets were quite a powerful team in the years 60 with the old name USSR. In fact, They were European champions in 1960 and achieved their best participation in a World Cup in the edition of 1966 held in England where they were eliminated in the semifinals by West Germany. It was the time of Lev Yashin, considered by many the best goalkeeper in history.
